6 Things Every Successful Business Owner Knows

No matter the business, no matter the industry, all successful entrepreneurs employ the same basic business techniques. Whether they learned them from a mentor or were gifted at birth, they all start on common ground. Learn these foundational basics, commit them to memory, and apply them to any business you want to see grow and prosper.

To Your Own Self Be True: To succeed in business, you must know yourself intimately. That may sound obvious, but many people live in denial about the existence of their weaknesses and the scope of their strengths. Take a good, honest look at your skill set and make a list of your own strengths and weaknesses. Then, find ways to compensate for your weaknesses, but don’t focus on them. Put your energy into your strengths. In the book, “Now, Discover Your Strengths,” the Gallup Organization reveals that building your strengths instead of fixing your weakness is the path to mastery and success.

It’s Not You; It’s Them: Customers come first in every successful business. Lose sight of this and lose every chance of advancing your work. Customers, clients, consumers —however you label them — must be the center of all you do. But beware, they can detect a phony a mile away, so don’t just pretend to care. Take the time to explore and understand your customer’s world. Ask plenty of questions and really listen to the answers. And don’t forget to listen to what they’re NOT saying. Observe body language and other non-verbal cues. The degree to which you invest in truly knowing your customer will determine your potential for success.

Relationships Reign: Networking stands as a time-honored aspect of prosperous entrepreneurship. Taking the time to build relationships with key people — mentors, experts, colleagues — proves invaluable over and over again. The support and direction provided by a solid network stabilizes any business in a turbulent climate and helps grow the company in good weather.

Roll with Change: Nothing stays the same. Just like the human body, businesses grow and develop, mature and transform. Expect that change and welcome it as it comes. Adaptability and flexibility will allow you to respond to growth or set backs without panic or paralyzing fear. Those who expect to run a business and never experience deviations from their plans set themselves up for disappointment and failure. Prepare yourself for possible alternate scenarios and don’t be surprised if something happens you did not anticipate. Simply take a deep breath, analyze your options, and embrace the situation as an opportunity to overcome.

Keep Moving Forward: Successful people and their businesses never stand still. From small daily action items to major decisions, productivity is the mark of a thriving organization. Spend time focusing on creative ways to increase productivity, which in turn, drives an increase in sales and profits. Research new technology that could make your business run more efficiently. Perhaps automation is the answer to your production problems, or maybe outsourcing is the solution to your internal workload. There are many ways to pump up productivity. Identify what makes sense for your business and do it. The investment will pay for itself in no time.

Everything in Balance: Any business carries with it the potential to dominate the life of its owner. Unchecked — it will. The most successful business owners are identified not only by their bottom line, but their top line as well. They balance every aspect of their life and control their business before it controls them. Because drawing the line between the personal and professional parts of life prove tricky, many find it helpful to actually make appointments for family and personal time. That’s right. Actually enter “Dinner with the family” or “30-minute workout” into your schedule and honor the commitment just as you would a business appointment. Once you map it all out on your schedule or daily planner, you can consciously balance the time you spend. A balanced personal life leads to success in business.
